A Basic Cleaning Routine

Different circumstances are going to call for different cleaning techniques. Our guide outlines some specific types of vertical blinds and the cleaning methods that may work best for them, but let’s start simple. Here is a simple step-by-step guide to a simple cleaning routine for vertical blinds. This can be your go-to method for ongoing maintenance. Complete this routine now and then to avoid significant dirt building up and making your blinds look like a mess.

Generally speaking, vertical blinds are fragile and require gentle cleaning. Take care at every step of the process – the following steps may take some effort, but it will be worth it to avoid more significant dirt or stains in the future. Start by filling up a tub with warm water and a mild laundry cleaning agent. A small amount of bleach (just a cap will do!) can be added if your blinds are white.

Now, remove your blinds. It may seem tedious, but unhooking your blinds allows you to clean each blade more easily. If there is any dry mould, use a soft brush to wipe it away gently. Soak a few blades at a time in your cleaning solution, and brush over any dirt that doesn’t immediately wash out.

Once all the shakes are washed, let out all the dirty water and refill the tub with clean, cold water. Rinse all the shades out, wipe them dry with a clean paper towel, and then hand the blinds back up to dry more thoroughly. And just like that, your blinds are clean!

Spot-Cleaning Your Vertical Blinds

Sometimes, a complete wash isn’t necessary. When a stain or mark is standing out like a sore thumb on your otherwise clean blinds, a spot clean could be a good idea. The way to go about this differs depending on the type of blinds you have, but here’s a quick rundown of how to get out of a nasty spot that’s driving you crazy.

Spot-Cleaning Vinyl Vertical Blinds

If your vertical blinds are vinyl, spot cleaning is typically a breeze. You’ll need to start by wiping down the entire area in question. Using a microfibre cloth and a solution of dish soap and warm water, gently rub out the spot. Vinyl isn’t a porous material, which means that the spot should lift relatively easily. No residue should remain after you rub it out, and once the blade is completely dry you shouldn’t see any signs of water or dirt at all.

Spot-Cleaning Fabric Vertical Blinds

Now, if you have fabric blinds, it isn’t quite so simple. There’s no need to worry, however – you can absolutely still spot-clean your vertical blinds. The main difference is that you really shouldn’t rub at the spot. Take the time to dab it carefully, using the same cleaning solution and cloth or sponge. Blot at it with soap until you think the stain will be out, then grab a clean cloth wet with water, and continue to dab at it until the soap is washed out.

Wiping and Vacuuming Your Blinds

The best piece of advice we can give you is to take small, regular steps to maintain the cleanliness of your vertical blinds. You don’t need to get out your buckets and take down each individual blade every single time. Get into the habit of either wiping down or vacuuming your blinds on a regular basis, and you can avoid significant dirt building up over time and ruining the state of your blinds.

Wiping and Vacuuming Vinyl Vertical Blinds

If you have vinyl blinds, a gentle wiping routine can make a world of difference. You won’t need to take down the blinds. Use a step ladder or steady chair to help you reach the entire blade from top to bottom, then use a duster to get rid of any dust, dirt, or other debris. Grab a cloth, damp with warm water and a little bit of dish soap, and give your blinds a quick and easy wipe to keep them clean.

Wiping and Vacuuming Fabric Vertical Blinds

If you have fabric vertical blinds, vacuuming is key! Running a vacuum over your blinds couldn’t be easier, and doing so can save you time in the future by keeping your vertical blinds free from dirt and major build-up.
