Cleaning Your Property for a Rental Inspection
How clean does my rental have to be?
In short, as clean as you can get it in the time you have allocated. Of course, large repairs are up to the landlord, but every little thing you do adds up to make a big impact. You may not think it would make a difference to have your clothes neatly in the closet rather than on the clothes chair in the corner of the bedroom, but you’d be surprised!
Will the inspector check every room?
The inspector is entitled to check all of the property, meaning it’s likely they will check all or most rooms. It’s important to clean all rooms in your rental property and don’t forget outside areas like gardens, porches, or outdoor living spaces!
Rental Inspection Checklist
- Prepare early. As soon as you know when your inspection is, start doing little things to prepare for it. It’s much less overwhelming to do a couple of small tasks per day than it is to leave everything until the day before and realise you don’t have enough time to get everything done.
- Make a list. Throughout your tenancy, little issues will crop up that don’t need to be fixed immediately, but still need addressing, such as a light fitting that’s always blowing your bulbs or a sink that blocks easily. As long as it isn’t damage caused by you, the landlord has responsibility. Write your list on paper or print it out so the property manager can take it with them when they leave.
- Make arrangements for your pets. If you’re allowed pets in your rental home, save everybody the stress and arrange for them to stay with a friend or family member for the day so they don’t get in the way.
- Start big. Kitchens and bathrooms tend to get the dirtiest and can be the hardest to clean, so get these things out of the way first. For your kitchen, check out appliances like the oven, along with the stove and rangehood and clean them thoroughly, as they pick up all the dust and grease. Scrub the walls and cupboard doors, removing any marks caused by cooking. In the bathroom, clean the shower, bath, and toilet, and spruce up the tiles and tapware for that nice shine.
- Do your regular clean. After the big-ticket items are taken care of, work your way down to the smaller items. Check out all the windows and give them a wipe down and clean the sills if necessary. Remove any cobwebs hanging around, organise the plants on your balcony or mow the grass, and vacuum or mop the floors. If there are any stains that weren’t there when you moved in— that’s where we come in!
